Alex and Andy finished their first full season playing hockey on our local Avonworth school district team in the spring of 2021. Alex decided to continue on to Pee Wee in the Fall of 2021 while Andy hung up his skates to join Megan and Nathan as part of the cheering section. Thanks to everyone who has come out to root Alex on now that the rinks are open to more spectators!

We were excited to get back on the slopes in 2021. We got plenty of days on snow thanks to virtual school giving us a chance to learn and work remotely from the mountains with our ‘pandemic pod family’. Nothing is better than wrapping up your classes and calls by noon to spend the afternoon skiing. And, even though the pandemic brought some changes to the resorts in early 2021, we discovered that the ‘Backseat Lodge’ works as a great option for a quick warm-up and snack.

Alex and Andy have been lobbying for a puppy for the last few years. Their focused messaging and resilient negotiation tactics paid off – we brought Scout home in early March 2021 and now Megan and Nathan wonder why they waited so long. It only took a few minutes for her to find her way into our hearts. Scout is the happiest puppy ever, full of energy and love for everyone.

It should come as no surprise if you’ve been studying the previous questions that Andy loves to ski. What should also come as no surprise if you know Andy is that he loves dessert – especially an incredible looking and incredibly delicious one. Nana wowed everyone with this snowy mountain wonderland of icing and a perfectly baked ‘sponge’! (Andy also loves the Great British Baking Show.)

First, a little background – when we go to Rehoboth Beach with the extended Troxell family, we don’t use a clock to tell time; we judge what time it is by the snacks that we’re eating. Second, this question is legitimately tough because all of these are GOAT beach eats. But there is one “o’clock” that Alex and Andy never miss each day – and that is Ice Cream O’Clock at the Royal Treat on Wilmington Ave. The literal ‘snack time’ tradition continued during our 11 (!) day beach vacation in June-July 2021. Now here's hoping that "Donut o'clock" can make a comeback in 2022!

Megan wanted to celebrate her 40th birthday with as many friends as possible after the previous year of lockdowns and social distancing made large gatherings challenging. Luckily, the weather and the pandemic cooperated in the beginning of August to allow for a perfect day of pontooning, picnicking and pie with some of Megan’s favorite people!

We tried something new on our trip out to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. After flying out to Denver, we picked up a 24-foot Class C RV. Alex and Andy quickly read the Chateau brand as “Cheetah” and it stuck for the rest of the trip. We had a blast on our first RV trip – taking a shower and baking fresh chocolate chip cookies at 80 mph certainly breaks up the long drive days!

We saw bear, bison, elk, and moose. We experienced geysers, mudpots, hot springs, and fumaroles. We took in breathtaking vistas at nearly every turn. And we even stumbled upon a Steelers bar in West Yellowstone. But the real highlight for Alex and Andy was sending the trails at Jackson Hole bike park – hitting the jumps, sailing over tabletops, and flowing the corners all while armored up like gladiators.

We were excited to spontaneously join Nathan’s friend Jayne on her 30-foot sailboat “Happy Place” in the Chesapeake Bay in early October when visiting cousin Harper in Virginia. It was amazing to see how well the kids sailed for their first times! And Scout was most definitely the cutest little pirate ever.

Nana really outdid herself with Alex’s optical illusion of a birthday cake – another incredible looking and decadently delicious cake! We can’t wait to see (and TASTE) what Nana has up her sleeve for the next birthday.

The Avonworth girls soccer team is easily now our favorite Pittsburgh sports team after an incredible run this fall to the district championship title and runner up in the state championship game. We cheered passionately to the point of losing our voices, politely encouraged the refs in making the right calls, and hoisted our homemade signs into the air with pride. We could not have been prouder of how all the Avonworth girls performed this season, but we hold a special place in our hearts for #25 (and sometimes #26…) Mia Burens, the boys’ former babysitter and virtual schooling tutor. LET’S GO ‘LOPES!

Megan has been blessed to have been at one firm throughout her entire career, and an incredibly special firm at that. Surrounded by supportive friends, colleagues and mentors, Megan became a partner at the firm this fall. She is grateful for all the encouragement that she has received and is excited to discover all that this new challenge will bring.

We snuck away to NYC for a few days to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. We packed a lot into a few shorts days, including seeing a show (Hadestown – highly recommended!), strolling through Central Park, and getting some pre-Christmas shopping in. And Nathan finally checked an item off his bucket list by walking across the Brooklyn Bridge!

Alex continues to enjoy playing the trumpet in his second year, and he got to play in his first concert in December. Andy picked percussion as his instrument, and he is getting really good at the bells. Spontaneous duets can be heard throughout the house at almost any hour of the day, sometimes even joined in by their friends Cora on trumpet and Isabelle on violin. And then the real fun starts when Nathan pulls out his trumpet to see how his chops are holding up after more than 2 decades in retirement...(Spoiler Alert: Not Well).
